FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is ECU/TCU tuning?
Modern vehicles are controlled by electronic control units that manage functions such as ignition timing, fuel delivery, throttle response, torque management, boost control and transmission operation.
ECU or TCU tuning modifies selected calibration parameters to change how the vehicle performs and responds. The exact changes available depend on the vehicle, engine, transmission, ECU/TCU type and software version.
What do Stage 1, Stage 2 and higher stages mean?
Stage terminology varies by vehicle and application.
Stage 1 is generally intended for stock or lightly modified vehicles. Stage 2 and higher stages may be designed around additional hardware modifications such as intake, exhaust or other performance components.
Some AMT platforms also offer Stage 2+, Stage 2++ or Stage 3 packages.
Always refer to the specific product page for the hardware, fuel and modification requirements of your vehicle. A “Stage 2” package on one vehicle should not be assumed to have the same requirements as Stage 2 on another platform.
How much horsepower or torque will I gain?
Performance gains vary according to the engine, ECU software, fuel quality, vehicle condition, hardware modifications and environmental conditions.
Where performance estimates are provided on a product page, they should be treated as application-specific estimates rather than a guarantee that every vehicle will produce an identical result.
Is tuning safe?
Performance tuning changes the factory calibration and can increase engine, transmission, drivetrain or exhaust-system load.
AMT Tuning develops calibrations with appropriate operating parameters and protection strategies in mind, but no performance modification can honestly be described as having zero risk or zero effect on component life.
Vehicle condition, maintenance, fuel quality, modifications and how the vehicle is driven all affect reliability.
Will tuning reduce the life of my engine or transmission?
There is no responsible way to guarantee that a performance modification will never affect component life.
A healthy, properly maintained vehicle using the correct fuel and hardware is important before tuning. Existing mechanical problems should be corrected before modified software is installed.
Can tuning affect my factory warranty?
Yes. Aftermarket ECU/TCU software may affect manufacturer warranty coverage.
Detection methods and warranty policies vary by manufacturer and dealer. Customers should consider their warranty situation before modifying factory software.
What flashing tool will I use?
There is no single flashing tool used for every AMT vehicle.
Depending on the application, AMT Tuning may use Powergate, BBS/BitBox, PCMFlash or another supported professional solution. Some vehicles can be programmed through OBD, while others require a direct ECU or bench connection.
AMT will identify the appropriate method for the specific vehicle and ECU.
Do I need a laptop?
It depends on the flashing system.
Some Powergate applications can be completed using the Powergate device and smartphone app. Other systems, including certain BBS/BitBox, PCMFlash or direct-ECU applications, require a compatible Windows computer.
The product description or AMT support team will confirm what is required.
How does remote tuning work?
The exact procedure depends on the vehicle and flashing system.
Typically, the customer identifies the vehicle and ECU, provides the required technical information, reads or retrieves the original software where applicable, and sends that information to AMT Tuning.
AMT prepares the applicable calibration and provides it through the supported flashing platform. The customer then writes the file to the vehicle using the supplied instructions.
Remote technical assistance is available when needed for supported procedures.
Is every AMT tune a custom dyno tune?
No.
Many AMT online packages are developed Stage calibrations matched to the specific vehicle, ECU software and selected modifications. They are not the same thing as a live custom dyno session unless the product or service is specifically advertised as such.
Can I return my vehicle to stock?
In many supported applications, yes.
The exact procedure depends on the vehicle, ECU and flashing system. Some platforms retain or provide access to the original software, while others use a different stock-restoration process.
Contact AMT if you need to confirm the stock-restoration procedure for your application.
Do I need modifications before tuning?
Not necessarily.
Many Stage 1 applications are designed for stock or lightly modified vehicles. Higher stages may require or strongly recommend specific hardware.
Always follow the requirements listed for your particular vehicle and tune rather than assuming that the same hardware rules apply across different platforms.
What fuel should I use?
Use the fuel grade specified for the calibration you purchased.
Different calibrations may be designed for different octane ratings or fuel types. Using lower-octane fuel than the tune requires can increase the risk of knock and poor performance.
If you are unsure, confirm the fuel requirement with AMT before flashing the vehicle.
What are Pops & Bangs / Crackle options?
Pops & Bangs or Crackle features intentionally change combustion and exhaust behaviour during certain operating conditions.
These features can increase exhaust-gas temperature and additional stress on catalytic converters, exhaust components, turbochargers and related hardware.
They are optional features and should be selected with an understanding of those additional risks.
Are emissions-related software options legal for street use?
Laws vary by country, province, state and jurisdiction.
Software or hardware changes that alter emissions-control systems may not be legal for use on public roads. Products or options designated for competition, racing or off-road use must be used accordingly.
Customers are responsible for determining the legal requirements that apply to their vehicle and location.
How long does remote tuning take?
Turnaround depends on the vehicle, ECU, requested calibration, file availability and whether AMT requires additional information.
Some services can be completed quickly once all required information is available, while more complex applications may take longer.
If timing is critical, contact AMT before ordering rather than assuming a guaranteed completion time.
What happens if I have a problem after flashing?
Contact AMT before making additional changes.
We may ask for information such as the VIN, ECU/software identification, flashing-device serial number, diagnostic trouble codes, screenshots, original files or data logs.
This allows us to determine whether the concern is related to software, the flashing process, vehicle hardware or an existing mechanical issue.
Are tuning files and digital services refundable?
Custom tuning files, tune updates, erase credits, licences, activations, unlocks, VIN/device assignments and similar digital services are customized services.
Once AMT Tuning begins processing the customized service or the applicable digital service has been delivered or applied, the sale is final and non-refundable except where required by applicable law.
Please review the complete Return & Refund Policy and Terms & Conditions before ordering.
Does AMT Tuning perform mechanical work?
AMT Tuning's Concord facility focuses on automotive software, ECU/TCU tuning, programming and related technical services.
We do not perform general mechanical repairs or mechanical performance installations. We can identify the hardware requirements for a calibration and, where appropriate, help customers understand what needs to be installed by a qualified mechanical shop.
Can a workshop use an AMT flashing tool on more than one vehicle?
Some professional flashing solutions can support multiple compatible vehicles rather than being permanently limited to one car.
Compatibility, licensing and account/device rules vary by platform. The tuning software or calibration is still purchased for the applicable vehicle even where the physical flashing tool can be reused.
Workshops interested in supporting multiple vehicles should contact AMT so we can recommend the appropriate platform.
How do I know whether AMT supports my vehicle?
Check the vehicle listings on our website or contact us with:
Year, make and model; engine and transmission; VIN where appropriate; vehicle modifications; and ECU/TCU identification or label photos if requested.
This allows us to verify compatibility before recommending a tuning or flashing solution.
